Most business people realize the need for a website in today's electronic society. Websites can be used as a source that explains your business and to attract new customers. But in today's financially tight times, how do you get a website that looks good but doesn't cost lots of money and know how? Yes, there are companies that will set up websites for you, but the monthly fees are expensive and many times you don't even own the website. This creates a situation where you are held "hostage" to the website provider.
A simple solution to this is GoDaddy and WordPress. Below are the simple steps.
First, go to GoDaddy and buy a website name, called a domain. You can do this online, or if it is intimidating, call them. GoDaddy's phone service is excellent.
There are some basic rules to follow when purchasing a domain.
- Always purchase a [dot] com name extension if at all possible.
- Select a name that is no longer than 25 characters.
- Whether to use your business name or not is up to you. However, it is easier to drive new customers to your website if the domain name contains the keywords your customers would be looking for. Example: Massage New York is more explanatory than Zen Massage.
Second, once you have purchased your domain name, go to WordPress to register for a free blog. If this seems overwhelming, WordPress has set up a site with video's that are excellent tutorials. Trust me, if you can use a computer to type a letter, you can set up a WordPress blog.
When you set up a WordPress blog, there are preset templates that you can choose from and customize to how you want your website to look.
After you have set up your free WordPress blog, forward your GoDaddy domain name to your WordPress blog. Call GoDaddy for assistance if need be.
The whole point of this is that for less than $25 a year, you can have your own website and you own the domain name. When people link to your website, they are using your domain name. The value of this is that when you are ready to go to the next step and have a custom website created, whether by yourself or someone else, the domain name stays yours and you don't have to rebuild website name recognition and presence.
Additional marketing tip:
Once you have your website set up, create a free Google account. To do this, go to Google. Under Business Solutions, list your business under Google Maps business listings. When a potential customer searches for your service in your area, your business will display at the top under local listings.
Welcome to the world of the internet!
