This article will discuss why it is still so important in 2012 to gain page rank by linking with highly relevant sources. The article will also explain in detail how relevant linking works.

It might be a lot easier to just turn a blind eye to Google's PageRank, but it is still needed when one is considering building an inbound linking campaign. When an internet marketer considers their external links, they need to consider the relevancy of their links and they need to consider Google PageRank. These are what are going to build up your website's online reputation, with regards to your online marketing campaign, and with regards to a topic or a keyword. While PageRank doesn't necessarily determine how you will rank regarding a certain keyword, it does make a difference with regards to your inbound links.

What Type Of Links Matter?

The objective of your link building campaign is to gain links from sites that are highly relevant. This is how your website will be perceived as being authoritative, with regards to a certain keyword. Google likes to see websites gaining links from highly relevant websites. It will also indicate that you are receiving links from a great keyword resource.

Looking at an example, you might gain an inbound link from two different websites that are both highly relevant to your website. However, one site might rank at PR 2, while the other link comes from a PR 4 website. The PR 4 website is going to have more value, with regards to the keyword that was used. Therefore, Google will award more weight to the PR 4 website link.

What you need to do is to gain as many high value links as possible, if you want for your website to be recognized as a relevant keyword authority. So, while it's important to get a link from say, a PR 8 website, it's even more important to gain a link from a PR 8 keyword relevant website.

How To Build Authority For Your Site

Let's look at a common example. If you have read a non-fiction book, then chances are that you have come across a reference page. The reference page is a listing of resources that have provided some of the book's information to the book's author. Reputable information needs to be cited in magazines and in journals as well. When these sources of information are referenced in another publication, the sourced information develops a reputation as being reputable.

This is the same way that the PageRank algorithm program works. Websites work like textbooks that use links as references. If your website is referenced with a link, then your website will gain a reputation as being a credible source for a particular keyword.

To go a little deeper, if part of your website was cited within the copy of another website, then many others would take your website seriously, with regards to the topic or the niche of your website. This would create for you a contextual link. This in turn creates stronger relevancy. Relevancy is the new internet marketing king.

To use a very simple example, if you were looking for psychology resources, would you search in a history book or in an art book? Of course not! You'd have to look in a textbook or a journal regarding psychology to find your relevant information. In the same manner that being referenced in a relevant textbook would help an author to gain authority, being linked to by a relevant website helps your internet marketing authority.

Using an internet example, let's say that your website is about the accommodations industry. Let's now say that you've received inbound links from a travel site and a pharmaceutical site. Both of these inbound links will add value to your website, and both might rank PR 4. However, you will gain more relevancy from the travel site, because when people think of the word 'accommodations', they will also relate that word to the word 'travel'.

Now, let's say that the travel site contains a paragraph in it that uses one of your target keywords as an anchor text. Now, let's say that you are referenced in the sidebar of the pharmaceuticals website. The pharmaceuticals website will have very little if no effect at all on your ranking, based upon keywords.

In short, websites with lower PageRank scores can rank higher for a specific keyword.

Here are some other points to keep in mind. When you are creating targeted links, keep in mind that there is a difference between the ranking in your browser, and the Page Rank value that Google uses. Your toolbar pagerank will provide a whole number up to 10. Google uses a very complex algorithm number. Also, Google's PageRank program is updated continually in real time. The toolbar's ranking is only updated on a quarterly basis. This means that in most cases, the numbers from this source will be out of date.

In the end, keep in mind that the relevancy of a website that links to you is very important. Google's PageRank plays an important part of your internet marketing program. You need to make sure to target websites that are highly relevant, based upon your target keyword, in order to gain authority for your website.
