Looking at the basics to designing a new website.

As most will know, the overall goal for a decent website design is to ensure that is aesthetically sound, easily accessible (users can navigate around the site without any problems), is able to do something (fill out forms, show videos, contains downloadable attachments etc), contains impressionable graphics and clear web content. These all have to be designed so that they open up on different internet browsers.

Good web design skills always take into consideration of cross browser compatibility. People tend to use the internet using internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera or from their mobile or IPhone. The websites they are searching for will indeed need to be as clear as they are in a normal internet browser, no matter what version they are using as this will reflect the quality of work that has been placed on to it. The trick to making sure that the website will work on most popular browsers is to limit the amount of fancy graphics applied.

Whether the visitor is using a Mac or PC or mobile phone, the site must be clear and structured well, enough for them to be able to obtain information quickly. Some browsers may not support advanced or complicated graphics, therefore limiting the use of graphics keeps it simple, readable and easier to navigate without any delays.

On the subject of graphics and images, another good web design knowledge is to make sure that any website containing pictures are of good quality and do not take long to download. Most visitors will not wait more than ten seconds for a page to load, therefore having the pictures optimised, in a smaller size and keeping the high picture quality. This can be done using the height and width measurements, allowing the rest of the webpage to load.

Adding content to website is also important, much more than any fancy designs or images. This is where the user can gain the information they are seeking and can then learn from what they have read. Any signs of obvious spelling mistakes or grammatical errors will put the reader off and they will instantly hit the red 'X' button on the top right hand corner. This is not good for people who rely on their websites to bring in business.

If it is a product you are selling you must make sure the content is punchy and will sell the product without rambling and providing enough detail to convince them to buy your product. The content must be informative and provide the visitor with the information they are seeking. Furthermore the content should fit into the web page neatly by the product image and is clear and succinct.

On any web design course one will learn the importance of using background colours. Some pages can be difficult to read due to the contrast in colours, it is important to make sure that the text and images stand out, without causing a throbbing headache. Furthermore, you must specify the link colours so that they load properly in different browsers.

Above all good general knowledge of design, coding and layout is paramount to producing good websites. These act as a portal gate for businesses and are the first places people would go for information, therefore test and retest so as not to come across any problems.
