Usually they say that the cream of the crop companies -- the best of the best are going to be listed on the first and second pages of the engines. So that is definitely a place I would suggest you start looking! As aforementioned, look at their portfolio. Some designers won't have the "look" you want, and that's okay!
One of the most important things you will learn along the way is that if you have a website you are going to need web design. It's just a fact of life. None of that cheap stuff that some kid did in their basement is going to be good either. You are going to need a premium company, someone that knows what they are doing, and has experience in the past. Its also helpful if they are reliable and do quality work. I made the mistake in January to hire someone who obviously is NOT reliable.
They have been doing my site since January and it's nothing hardcore - it should NOT be taking this long. They never get back to me either. Very unreliable. Don't make the same mistake I did. Check out their portfolio, take a good long look at their web design prices and website design prices. If possible use a website design cavan Ireland or a company with all their website design prices right on site. Even if you have to call them, that's fine. Just be sure they have a phone number where you can call them.

I'm lucky if I can change the html code on my Myspace let alone a whole site all by myself! These guys are not as expensive as one would think. Unless you really have a complex site - almost anyone can afford a customized website design!
