It is ok to walk into a company and say well I like the font on this site and I like the layout of this site. They will appreciate the direction. The next thing after you have sat down with the company and exchanged ideas. Then comes the concept stage they will provide you with most likely provide you with about two to three concepts. That will give you an idea if they are on the right path. Once you have picked a concept show it to people. Show it to your friends, family, co-workers. Showing it to other people will give you a good idea if the concept is good and user friendly.
Most concepts are just jpegs so that is just something to keep in mind. Developing the site is another thing entirely and that is a long process. That process usually will take 4-6 weeks to have a fully functioning website. But the design of the site is very important. Don't back down make your opinions known. This is how your customers are going to view you not the design company that designed the site for you.
